The gastronomy of Granada is rich because of its Moorish, Jewish and Andalusian heritage and because of the variety of foods that are cultivated in these lands, thanks to its varied climate.
Typical products of Granada are olive oil, bread, cheese, Trevélez ham and other cold meats, honey, green asparagus, caviar from Riofrío, tropical fruits or Motril fish.
Representative dishes are the beans with ham, the Sacromonte’s omelette, the the remojon, a dish elaborated with orange and cod, the potatoes “a lo pobre”, crumbs, San Anton pot, fennel stew, “segureño” lamb , Ríofrio trout and many others.
It also highlights its typical pastries with the famous Piononos, the carnival curd, the Alpujarra bowls, the fig bread, wine cakes and puff pastries or “pestiños“, and the variety of tropical fruits.
In the city, tea shops, in the Moorish style and classic cafés are famous. Granada has an infinity of restaurants and bars where you can eat and drink tasting this gastronomic wealth.
Going for tapas is a good way to get to know Granada. Moving from bar to bar, tasting the flavor of its gastronomy, mixing with its people and practicing this widespread custom. Granada is famous for its tapas, which are served together with drinks under the same price (around € 2). We will find different types of tapas according to each place. In some bars they are numbered and can not be chosen. In others they allow the customer to choose from a wide list. There are bars in which the simplicity and quality of the raw material stand out, in others they take great pains in the elaboration and there are also “to remove the hunger of the students”, in which the quantity over quality prevails … it is a matter of personal preferences.
We can not fail to mention our Alhambra beer and our wine. Granada has its own Qualified Denomination of Origin and there are more than 80 wineries making excellent wines. As for the Alhambra beer, we recommend to taste its two “stars”: the 1925’s one (stronger and savory) and the “special” (our favorite).
In Granada there are many bars. The best tapas areas are in Realejo, near “Gran Vía”, near “Plaza Nueva” and Elvira Street, the lowers of Bullring, Albaicín, Plaza de la Pescadería o Navas Street, among others. There are also some charming and tourist areas, such as the terraces of “Paseo de los Tristes” or “Plaza Nueva”.
Here, a wide selection of bars that we like.
